SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR ACCEPTED ARTISTS: POSTMARKED BY AUGUST 4

WHAT TO SUBMIT:

SELECTED ARTISTS will draw from personal experience to create drawings and illustrations on paper that depict narratives, rumors, jokes, myths and popular beliefs of contemporary legend (as the term is defined in this call).

Examples of the kind of subject-matter you may wish to take as your point of inspiration include: the mythical giant alligators of New York City’s sewer system; the tale of the babysitter who gets a series of frightening phonecalls from a stranger, only to find out later that the stranger is calling from inside the house the babysitter is receiving the calls in; rumours of a highly organized crime ring drugging people and surgically removing their organs for sale on the black market; and the long-held belief that the heavy metal music community is a global Satanic cult.

But don’t stop there. Your legend-material could be of the not-so-well-known variety. For instance, there may be a bit of legend that is unknown to anyone outside certain circles of your hometown. Like the mumbling “crazy” person who wanders around town, the one who everybody has a theory about but nobody really knows. Try to remember some of those spurious tales you’ve heard – or told – over the years; examine recurring mass media rumours; or dig up some old legend-spam in your junk email.  There’s lots of juicy material to draw from.

ABOUT THE SHOW:

When a Stranger Calls a Friend of a Friend is an international drawing/illustration show that attempts to examine cross-cultural parallels in contemporary legend and the performance, transmission, form and function of modern urban folklore around the world.

In this context, the term ‘legend’ is interpreted as to include narratives, rumors, jokes, myths and popular beliefs that change over time due to repetition and embellishment, and which emerge spontaneously without a traceable source, as they spread from person to person and via mass media and complex communication networks. The terms ‘contemporary’, ‘modern’ and ‘urban’ refer to post-industrial legends that actively circulate in a given community today.

Curated by Ryan Ringer and produced by Methinks, When a Stranger Calls a Friend of a Friend will be exhibited for two weeks at Project 165’s gallery in Toronto, Canada. The exhibition will also be open for the August edition of Pedestrian Sunday, a popular monthly festival in Toronto’s historic Kensington Market district. This exhibition will be thoroughly promoted on the Internet, in print and by word-or-mouth; and complimented by a live story-telling event and cute little exhibition catalogue.
