PaceWildenstein is one of the city’s premier galleries for modern and contemporary painting, drawing, sculpture, video and installation art. They have three locations in New York. We’ve only ever visited the Chelsea locations. Some of the best shows we’ve experience on NYC Roadtrip have been here. Exhibiting artists have included: Kiki Smith, Zhang Huan and Michal Rovner. …On our next Roadtrip, we will pop by PaceWildenstein’s 534 W 25th St location for the opening reception of British artist David Hockney’s first New York show in 12 years, which features a collection of recent landscape paintings of his native Yorkshire.

DAY ONE: Saturday, October 24, 6 – 10pm

DAY TWO: Sunday, October 25, 6 – 10pm

To RSVP, send us an email before Friday, October 23, with “Workshop RSVP” in the heading.

We will demonstrate various mask-making methods and lead you in the design & build of your own personal mask. We will also help you build props and, above all, facilitate a creative space in which to brainstorm, workshop costume ideas and get excited about Halloween in the Big Pumpkin.

If you don’t need schooling and you just want to drop in to work with us, that’s okay. If you’re serious about making a mask or building a prop or a crazy costume, and you want help, we will aid you in getting it done, or at least near completion, by the end of the allotted two days.

Note: You do not have to attend both sessions.  A $5 donation applies for one or both days (but no one will be turned away for lack of funds).

We have tools, but limited materials – so you will have to check with us to see if we have what you will need. Be prepared to get stuff done!

Email us in advance (methinkspresents@gmail.com) if you have any questions about materials or costume ideas. Otherwise, come prepared to make a mask or costume.

We Made a Deal with the Devil

The Official NYC Roadtrip Party!

Devil’s Night
Friday, October 30
7pm – 12am
Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition Art Space
499 Van Brunt Street
Red Hook, Brooklyn
PWYC

Hard on the heels of a daring journey across the wilds of Eastern Canada, Methinks – your gracious NYC Roadtrip hosts – have partnered with the Brooklyn Art Project, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition and others to host the New York City edition of this 15-city touring art show. We Made a Deal with the Devil was inspired by “La Chasse-galerie”: a cautionary French-Canadian legend about a group of 19th-century loggers who make a deal with the Devil to ride a flying canoe home for an annual New Year’s Eve party.

Includes: a portable drawing exhibition, a zine library, installations, performance art, live music and other work by over 100 artists who forged their creations in the deep woods of folklore, collective memory, mythmaking, adventure and risk.

Highlights: instructions on how to diagnose and treat the mysterious species of madness known as nympholepsy; psychogeographical research findings; the exorcism of the world’s first Satanic rapper; and an exposé on the elusive Eastern Canadian Sasquatch.

Performance art by Ryan Ringer, Graham Nash, Wendy Ventricle + walls of experimental sound by New York’s Squamous Os + rapper Garbageface & psychedelic beatboxer Joe Law + other performances  TBA.

Bourgeois Pig
111 E. 7th St.

This cushy beatnik wine bar, swathed in warm red light and adorned with mismatched plush chairs, marble tables and velvet, is a good place for a date or a first night in the city with friends. The menu offers savory fondues and cheese plates, wine, espresso, Belgian beers, cocktails, decadent chocolate drinks with cute names like Josephine and Bianca. Keep in mind, though, this place is not cheap, and the servers seem not to like big groups or customers with shallow pockets. But if you find yourself in the East Village looking for a cozy pitstop after dinner, and you’ve got a few bucks to burn, check it out.

PUBLIC ART: A Clearing in the Streets 0

Collect Pond Park; Leonard & Centre St

Julie Farris and Sarah Wayland-Smith, both with backgrounds in landscape design, were commissioned by the Public Art Fund to design and build this temporary public installation in downtown New York’s Collect Pond Park. A Clearing in the Streets is a living urban meadow partially enclosed by a series of plywood panels, measuring 15 feet in diameter. It’s an attempt to “re-insert” nature into the concrete jungle while allowing people on the street an opportunity to re-evaluate how they relate to their urban surroundings.

On view through October, 2009.

One of our most popular and fun activities is our Chelsea Gallery Hop. On our second night in town, armed with a list of gallery openings, a big bunch of us meet at a pre-determined street corner in the Chelsea Art District – and away we go into the art-fueled night! This is a great opportunity to let loose with your fellow Roadtrippers and mix it up with local gallery goers!
